#AtoZChallenge – M is for Manpupuner

Posted on April 14, 2012October 7, 2012 By tmycann 11 Comments on #AtoZChallenge – M is for Manpupuner

ManpupunerI can’t believe I’ve made it 13 straight days of blogging for the A to Z blogging challenge. And I have a great one for M too: The Manpupuner plateau is where the climactic scene of Dust to Blood takes place.

It’s a remarkable location that few outside Russia know about, and I was lucky I discovered it while I was letting my fingers do the walking across various online resources. (All hail Wikipedia!) It was the same kind of serendipitous find as when I stumbled across Khotyn outside of Chernivtsi, and gave me goosebumps to think that maybe there was more truth to the fiction I was spinning than what anyone might expect from a story that ultimately revolves around dragons.

Even the fact that there are local legends about giants and shamans visiting this place and transformed by it, tied in neatly with the mystical element that, by that point in the story, was the resolution of a major story arc, and furnished exactly the kind of moody atmosphere required.

Manpupuner is not smallIn fact, it was strange seeing such a collection of pictures with odd cloud formations and obvious indications that these surreal rock piles dwarf humanity and put our puny selves in quite a different perspective. And this final picture of the place blanketed in snow fueled my imaginative fear for my characters at an uncertain weather outlook:

Manpupuner cloaked in snowSo. Now it’s back to editing. I hope you’re enjoying this virtual tour. 🙂

What intriguing rock formations. They’re so…unlikely, aren’t they? Almost eerie. Very cool! Something new to tuck away in the brain–thank you!

I love M the best. The place in the photos, the mystical imagining playing in your story should combine for an incredible novel. I love the winter photo.
