Book Spotlight: Scent of a Mate by Millie Taiden

Scent of a Mate blog tourI’m very happy to share my crit partner Milly Taiden’s latest release as part of her month-long blog tour. She has an amazing Rafflecopter give-away running (see below), but the real excitement is from the blurb and excerpt. Enjoy!

Mission: Scent a Mate
Jordan Alvarez knew that a promise to her best friend involved staking out the local wolf pack’s scenting ceremony and recording the graphic details, but she was the writer and the only one with the balls to finish the task. No one would know that four human women had sneaked proof of their rituals, or at least, that was the plan until Aric Wolfe showed up.

Mission: Stake a Claim
Aric Wolfe knew his baby sister was up to something, and expected her best friend, Jordan, to be in on the chaos. He finally had an opportunity to lay claim to a mate that had been under his nose for years. Jordan’s scent called to both the man and the animal, and he was done fighting the call of the beast. It was time to mark his mate.

Mission: Survive an Alpha
When a good intention creates a problem for the Wolfe family, Jordan finds herself being stalked by a woman intent on claiming Aric as her own. Battle lines will be drawn, love will be put to the test, and Aric will have to fight Jordan’s strong personality to keep her alive. Two alpha hearts seeking control will either find the balance or risk losing their love forever.

A burst of wind shook the trees and kissed her skin. Electricity danced in the air, turning it thick with anticipation. Something cracked behind her. She swirled so fast her earpiece fell. Slowly taking in every dark crevice between the tree limbs, she looked for the noisemaker. Nothing. But she knew there was something out there. She could feel eyes watching her. No matter how hard she searched, nothing came out from the darkness. Dammit. She should have brought her mace, or her stun gun, or hell, even her bat. Something. But in her excitement she’d left all of her precautionary ass-kicking-survival-kit in her SUV.
She crouched down, quietly cursing the darkness, looking for her ear piece. A quick move from her left grabbed her attention. One very large, very angry looking brown wolf stood there, baring his teeth at her. She shot up to her feet, her hands immediately going into fists. She knew all the Wolfe’s in their wolf shape. With a white wolf for a mother and a black one for a father, all the men had some combination of black and white on them. She knew Aric’s by heart from secretly watching him all those times in her youth while he tore from his shorts to run with his brothers and friends. This was not one of the wolves she knew.
“Now you stay right over there and nobody gets hurt,” she whispered. Her mind ran a million miles per hour. She tried to figure out how to defend herself if it came down to a fight with the big wolf. Something poked her from behind. She grasped around, until she had her hands wrapped tight on the branch behind her, tugging until she broke a limb off.
A low growl was the animal’s only response. Heartbeats pounded hard in her chest, spreading the fear she was trying to tamp. He took a menacing step toward her. She didn’t know what the animal’s plan was, but her gut said it wasn’t a good one.
“Listen to me carefully, fur ball. You’re not going to turn me into puppy chow. Now go back to the party down there,” she cocked her head to the side, “and forget I’m up here. Got it?”
The wolf’s features turned darker, as if angered by her words. Trust her to piss off an already angry wolf. Nice.
A deeper growl made her jerk her head to the right. Another wolf stood there. His gaze locked on the brown. She knew this wolf. The thick black coat with the white paws and muzzle belonged to only one man. Aric.
The standoff was making her stomach queasy, and her stupid outfit was itching like crazy. Aric’s wolf took three steps and stood in front of her. The brown growled and launched toward them.
Oh hell.
Aric shoved the wolf off. The brown whimpered from a bite, but the stupid thing didn’t stop. It went for her again. Aric snarled, digging his paws into the brown fur and biting down on the brown’s neck. She winced.
With the branch in her grasp, she watched the brown lower its head in submission. Apparently that was enough for Aric. He let go of the wolf and turned to her. The brown took Aric’s distraction to jump in her direction, but she’d been watching the wolf closely. She had a feeling he wouldn’t give up so easily. Her vision sharpened, and she focused on the animal leaping toward her. She swung the branch with all her might and heard the sound of bone cracking as it made impact with the wolf’s face. He landed on his side with a thud. Aric stood and shoved at the other wolf, growling at it and snarling a warning. The other animal left, limping and whimpering. Every few steps he’d turn and glare at her.
The burst of adrenaline rushing through her made her continue to grip the branch. She stared at the location the other wolf had left through, waiting to see if he would turn around and attack. Something brushed her leg, taking her concentration from the other animal and bringing it back to the present. Shit. Aric had found her. She glanced down at the black and white wolf, which reminded her so much of a Dalmatian.
“Er… Aric?” She whispered. Her throat went dry. This was the man she’d wanted since forever and his muzzle was level with her privates.

Announcing a New Release: Creatus

CREATUS - Final Front CoverToday we have a treat from another one of my Triberr-mates: Carmen DeSousa is celebrating the release of her latest work with a give-away. Given my own love of magical realism (another variant of the crypto-history I like to write), I couldn’t not spread the love. Without further ado, then:

In every myth there is a modicum of truth…
The reason we believe in Fairy Tales—and Monsters.

As the sun’s rays peeked above the horizon, lighting the abyss below her, she inhaled a deep breath, closed her eyes, and jumped. She didn’t scream; she didn’t look down. As much as she hated her life, she hoped it wouldn’t end this way. She’d really like to see him one more time.

Her life didn’t flash before her eyes as she’d always heard. Just an image of her mother covered in blood and her Dark Angel telling her he was sorry.

Creatus, by best-selling author Carmen DeSousa, is a new romantic-suspense novel with a supernatural edge that answers the myths and fairy tales you’ve heard about preternatural sentient beings.

Prepare yourself to believe.

Guest Post: Sabrina Garie – Fires of Justice

Dragon dollI’m always a fan of supporting friends who are publishing new books, so this week I’m happy to host Sabrina Garie as she promotes her Fires of Justice release. Take it away Sabrina:

I am so glad to be visiting Tonya whose thoughtfulness and intelligence shine in every word she writes.  I hope I get close to her talent in my post today. (editor’s note: I only let friends talk about me this way… <G>) I’ve brought a friend with me, my pet dragon Charlie, short for Charonte. He usually hangs out on my bed, demonizing his stuffed brethren, but I thought I’d give the other stuffties a break. He’s with me to help me talk about a passion Tonya and I both share—dragons and dragon lore.

Why do I love dragons so much? Let me be bold. Dragons are real—at least in our hearts and minds.  How can they not be? Ubiquitous across the time and geography of human cultures, they link magic and science, past and future, east and west. They show up at the birth of the world in African creation myths, symbolize entire nations like Wales and Bhutan, and herald the end of gods—Ragnorak—in Nordic mythology. When depicted in a circle with the tail in the mouth of the dragon, they signify infinity—the power and inevitability of rebirth and renewal. Cloaked in mystery, eastern lore reveres them as a source of wisdom and power while western myth paints them as evil, stingy, and reptilian. Friend or foe, dragon imagery marries destruction with purification. To embrace the power of the dragon is to welcome change and growth. And they usually fly. How cool is that?

That to me is the allure of dragons—they represent the perpetual change inherent in the cycle of life.  Sexy and scary.

Given my passion for these scaly, mischievous devils, I had to use them somehow in my writing. My paranormal debut, Fires of Justice, takes a stab at dragons and dragon imagery in fun, new ways.

The hero, Cullen McMahan, is a fire shifter, which gives him the ability to change into creatures associated with the fire element—dragons, phoenixes, salamanders. During the story, we see him twice as a dragon, although it’s his turn as a phoenix that gets the real fireworks in the story started. In dragon form, he revives the earth, which has been diseased by black magic and heals a rogue wizard.

Cullen’s had it hard. His parents died young and he and his twin sister were physically and emotionally battered in a battle with witches. The guardian of balance, justice, and unity (all three are foundational elements of fire and dragon imagery), takes the twins, separates them, and indentures them as her soldiers. Cullen’s heart needs a new start, so he’ll have walk through the fire to get the reward. Good thing our heroine is a fire witch. Too bad she’s the daughter of the witches who ruined him. It’s why dragons, although cute, remain mysterious and usually frightening figures—rebirth and renewal are rarely easy or painless. But it’s worth it for the happy ending.

I’d love to hear from you. What’s your favorite dragon or dragon story? I’m giving away a free copy of my eBook (it is eBook only) to one commenter (remember to leave your email address).

Fires of JusticeAlways read the fine print when swearing an eternal oath to gods and guardians…

Beholden by the sacred vows of her coven, fire witch Calista Reid agrees to temporarily mate with shifter Cullen McMahan to fulfill a mission assigned by the guardians. When tall, dark and damaged arrives on her doorstep, generating enough heat to scorch a fire witch, Calista finds herself drawn to his battle-hardened body and broken soul. His pain speaks to her own deep-rooted isolation and the intensity of his hunger slakes her passion like no other.

Cullen, scarred by a past that left him an indentured soldier to the guardians, resents yet another hump-on-command assignment…until he encounters the compassionate, fearless, incendiary redhead who detonates his body and reawakens the emotions sacrifice and loss had suppressed. But Cullen harbors a terrible secret—one that reaches back into Calista’s troubled childhood and threatens the foundation of their growing bond.

Guest Post: Flash Fiction

As the main part of my commitment to help a fellow author keep her name in the limelight in honor of her recent release of Blue Moon House, I’m happy to share with you a guest post by Angelica Dawson:

At a recent writing convention, I was invited to be part of a panel about flash fiction. I participate in daily flash fiction contests, but I was pleased to learn a few things as well. I thought, for Tonya’s audience, I would summarize some of what we covered in the panel.

The most contentious question asked was: what is flash fiction. I had a pretty clear idea in my head. It was a short piece, with a concrete word count (exactly 100 words, 100-250 words, etc.) that was prompted by the person requesting the piece. That was NOT what my fellow panelists and audience defined it as. In fact, the only thing we did agree on was that it was short. Most didn’t use prompts. Many believed that if the story continued after writing the flash piece, it wasn’t really flash fiction to begin with. Many thought my flash fiction was really just free writing.

So what is flash fiction? It depends who’s asking. If you visit any of the weekly flash fiction sites/contests/blogs that I frequent, my definition is pretty apt. If you ask Every Day Fiction or Daily Science Fiction, you might get something different.

Another big question: What do you get paid for writing flash fiction?

I get paid nothing, so far. My flash fiction has been in large part self-gratifying. I get a prompt, I get a kernel of a story and I write it. By posting it in popular places (like #menagemonday) I give other readers a taste for my writing and a link to my blog. The best pieces are those that beg to be continued. The characters I only had for a few words are so real to me, so defined, and with a hint at their plot arc, I have taken flash pieces and turned them into entire novels. (That’s happened twice now with a possible third.)

Looking for the $$? Well, you can get them. Here are just a few links I found in a quick google search, so I’m sure there are many more out there.

Want to know where I post? Here’s a list of my weekly flash fiction stops. I don’t make it to everyone every week, but I’m usually found in three or more.

So, do you have any questions about flash fiction? Do you enjoy writing or reading flashes? Let me know!

OK: This is the third time in recent months I’ve been pushed to think about Flash Fiction; I may need to revisit the fun and see where it leads me. In the meantime, if you’re one of the large and growing audience of women who enjoy erotica, check out Dawson’s new books, Blue Moon House and Campus Sexploits 3.

Guest Post: Jennifer James – Love Kinection

Tom Walker, Love KinectionAs promised, Jennifer James is back one last time to spread a little more excitement about Love Kinection (which I reviewed earlier this week). Take it away Jenn:

It’s my job today to interview Tom from LOVE KINECTION. I’m nervous. He’s really cute and funny and I don’t want to stare at him and be a dork. *sigh* We’re meeting for coffee at a Panera Bread that’s in a nice central location between our houses. (I may have an ulterior motive of scoring one of the giant cookies from the pastry display, but I admit nothing.)

Jennifer James: So, Tom. Hi. *blushes because he’s so handsome and grinning at me.*

Tom Walker: Hi Jenn. Good to see you again. Are you hot?

JJ: Ermm, no. *blushes more*

TW: *smiles wider* You know, Abby used to turn red like that around me. Not so much anymore though. I think after you’ve seen someone naked enough times, the effect starts to wear off.

JJ: What effect? *takes a gulp of coffee and burns herself*

TW: The effect all sexy geeks have on women. We overwhelm them with our special nerd aura.

JJ: *laughs* Uh-huh. I see. So, I’m supposed to ask you some questions.

TW: Is it safe?

JJ: Don’t cross the streams.

TW: Keep it secret, keep it safe.

JJ: What? *breaks cookie in half and shares it with the hunky man across from her*

TW: Noob. It’s from Lord…

JJ: I know what it’s from. I’m just not tracking with how that follows mine.

TW: Sorry. I’m not that great at movie quotes. That’s more Abby’s area. *He lets his arm rest on the table long enough for me to see the new ink he’s sporting on the inside of his forearm. “Abby” scrolls across the muscle in black lettering*

JJ: *grabs Tom’s hand to get a better look at his tattoo* Awww…….

TW: *His lips twitch and he lets me look my fill* She’s a great girl.

JJ: So, when are you guys tying the knot?

TW: Soon. She doesn’t want anything big, just us and a few close friends. Moms and dads, that sort of thing.

JJ: Better to do it before she’s showing, right?

TW: How did you know Abby’s pregnant?

JJ: *Smug smile* You just told me. She told me to ask you how practice was going, and she was gorging on Ben and Jerry’s. so….

TW: Ah. Well, I guess you’re a smart nubby, anyway.

JJ: Thanks. So, my friend Sarah wants to know how you spent five years staring at Abby and never asked her out.

TW: Oh. Well, when I first met her I had a fiancée. We broke up before the wedding, but by that point Abby was dating the douchebag. I wasn’t much up for a new relationship. Then she got screwed over and I didn’t want to be her rebound guy so I gave her space.

JJ: Hmmm…so, what’s your favorite MMORPG game?

TW: WoW.

JJ: Wow? What the hell is that?

TW: World of Warcraft. *coughs into hand* Nubcake.

JJ: Shush. I don’t speak text. Dork. Keep it up and I’ll confiscate what’s left of that cookie.

TW: You can try.

JJ: *turns scarlet and looks at the floor* Ahem. So, Tonya also wants to know if you make tech house calls often. I think she might need you to come fix something….

TW: *Snickers* No, actually I don’t. I try to leave work at work. Plus, when you start messing in people’s systems, you run across all their porn…It gets awkward.

JJ: *Wide eyed* Oh.

TW: If Tonya needs something fixed, I’ve got a single friend that can help her out. *winks*

JJ: *giggling* Oh, I’m sure you do.

Blogger Interjection: HEY! I’m happily married, here!

JJ:Now, back on topic. We all need to learn more about you.

TW: Ah. It’s like Christmas, but with more….me.

JJ: I thought you didn’t do movie quotes that well.

TW: I lied.

JJ: Okay Mr. Stark. Did you really forget that cable?

TW: Yes. Of course. Think I planned leaving it there so I’d have an excuse to go back?

JJ: *arches eyebrow*

TW: No, really. I did forget it. I was so turned on I couldn’t see straight. And aggravated.

JJ: Okay…over share. *sips coffee and tries to calm heartbeat.* Let’s back away from the sex stuff. What do you like best about yourself?

TW: What is this, a job interview? I have nice toes.

JJ: Nice toes?

TW: Yep.

JJ: Boxers, briefs, or commando?

TW: Women and men’s underwear. Look, the only time it matters is when I’m taking them off. Right? But for the record, I go boxer briefs. And not silk or something like that. They’re all slippery and crawl up your—

JJ: GAH! Stop. Just, stop. Too much. Besides, if they’re red, then they’re Satan’s panties anyway.

TW: *laughs* Nicely done. So let me ask you a question.

JJ: O-kay. *Nervous*

TW: Have you watched Season 4 of True Blood yet?

JJ: *sighs* No.

TW: Abby and I watch that show together.

JJ: Me and hubs do too. But I think he’s more in it for the boobs.

TW: Nothing wrong with that.

There you have it: More reasons to grab a copy of Love Kinection, to find out about Tom and Abby.
