As you will have noticed if you’ve been following me in recent months, I’ve been working on my latest novel. The final draft is done and off to the editor, so now it’s on to cover love… Gayla pulled off another great one–which was a difficult task, given an alien protagonist who was genetically engineered to wear the median skin tone of all earthlings. I have to tell you… There aren’t many options for people of color as cover models. Even fewer that are interracial between two women. So we took off in the direction of the galaxies through which they travel. I’m very proud to share this with you:
Given where the story is in the editing process, I suspect my estimate of a July release remains reasonable. I’m really looking forward to sharing this one with everyone.
As I mentioned in a post in January, I have signed up to be one of the authors participating in the Hotel Paranormal series. This week, I got the final version of the cover for my book. I’m so stoked I can hardly contain myself, so I wanted to share it with you:
The story is slated for release in early January, so it’s along way off–and I need to finish the Red Slaves trilogy that inspires the events in the story, too. It will be a stand-alone spin-off about one of the next-generation dragon shifters that I’ve already half plotted. I’m looking forward to writing the story, and with such a glorious cover to help me keep my eyes on the prize, it should be an easy one to write.
It’s always a good day when I get to help out my writer friends. Today, Ciara Ballintyne announces:
About the Book
Only a fool crosses a god, but Ellaeva and Lyram will do anything to get what they want.
Chosen as a five-year-old orphan to be the Left Hand of Death, Ellaeva has nothing to call her own—nothing except a desire to avenge her murdered parents. Her duties leave her no time to pursue the man responsible, until both her work and revenge lead to the same place—the lonely castle where Lyram Aharris is serving out his exile for striking his prince.
Lyram is third in line for the throne, and when the castle is unexpectedly besieged, he fears his prince means to remove him from contention for the crown permanently. Ellaeva’s arrival brings hope, until she reveals she has not come for the siege, but instead she hunts the castle for a hidden necromancer dedicated to the dark god of decay.
Within their stone prison, Ellaeva and Lyram must fight to save themselves from political machinations and clashing gods. But as the siege lengthens, the greatest threat comes from an unexpected quarter.
About the Author
Ciara Ballintyne grew up on a steady diet of adult epic fantasy from the age of nine, leaving her with a rather confused outlook on life – she believes the good guys should always win, but knows they often don’t. She is an oxymoron; an idealistic cynic.
She began her first attempts at the craft of writing in 1992, culminating in the publication of her debut work, Confronting the Demon, in 2013. Her first book to be published with Evolved Publishing is In the Company of the Dead.
She holds degrees in law and accounting, and is a practising financial services lawyer. In her spare time, she speculates about taking over the world – how hard can it really be? If she could be anything, she’d choose a dragon, but if she is honest she shares more in common with Dr. Gregory House of House M.D. – both the good and the bad. She is a browncoat, a saltgunner, a Whedonite, a Sherlockian, a Ringer, and a Whovian… OK, most major geek fandoms. Her alignment is chaotic good. She is an INTJ.
Ciara lives in Sydney, Australia, with her husband, her two daughters, and a growing menagerie of animals that unfortunately includes no dragons.
Last week turned out to be a terrible, horrible, very bad week for me and thoroughly derailed all of my writing plans. But Sunday I got good news. I HAZ COVER!
So I’m sharing it with you.
I did manage to do all my school work, and have a glimmer of hope on the horizon, but in my current state of superstitiousness… I’ll save any discussion of that until I have more than just a glimpse of what the future holds.
As I’ve mentioned before, this particular story had not been in this year’s plan, so represents a whole new direction for me. It’s still going through final revisions, but I have a draft blurb, and a tentative publication date of Friday. Tell me what you think:
In 2078, Earth was invaded. After the Fall stories document that time.
Sienna was trying to find a refuge away from Earth that would be safe for both her and her unborn child. Then she mistook a Siamet for a Katarr.
Zaun was doing his part to build the Resistance when a nasty trick lands him in bed with Sienna.
Overcoming language and trust obstacles is the least of their worries when their survival is on the line.
Novelette with a word count of 10,200.
Is this a story you would want to read?
This week, I hope to get back on track. I did at least get to take a 2-mile hike yesterday for the first time in a month, and, as mentioned, finished all my assigned school work. I would like to add another 10K words to my Red Slaves story this week to make up for what I missed in the storm that was last week.
In the meantime, check out how my fellow ROW80ers are doing with their goals.
I’m very happy to share my crit partner Milly Taiden’s latest release as part of her month-long blog tour. She has an amazing Rafflecopter give-away running (see below), but the real excitement is from the blurb and excerpt. Enjoy!
Mission: Scent a Mate
Jordan Alvarez knew that a promise to her best friend involved staking out the local wolf pack’s scenting ceremony and recording the graphic details, but she was the writer and the only one with the balls to finish the task. No one would know that four human women had sneaked proof of their rituals, or at least, that was the plan until Aric Wolfe showed up.
Mission: Stake a Claim
Aric Wolfe knew his baby sister was up to something, and expected her best friend, Jordan, to be in on the chaos. He finally had an opportunity to lay claim to a mate that had been under his nose for years. Jordan’s scent called to both the man and the animal, and he was done fighting the call of the beast. It was time to mark his mate.
Mission: Survive an Alpha
When a good intention creates a problem for the Wolfe family, Jordan finds herself being stalked by a woman intent on claiming Aric as her own. Battle lines will be drawn, love will be put to the test, and Aric will have to fight Jordan’s strong personality to keep her alive. Two alpha hearts seeking control will either find the balance or risk losing their love forever.
A burst of wind shook the trees and kissed her skin. Electricity danced in the air, turning it thick with anticipation. Something cracked behind her. She swirled so fast her earpiece fell. Slowly taking in every dark crevice between the tree limbs, she looked for the noisemaker. Nothing. But she knew there was something out there. She could feel eyes watching her. No matter how hard she searched, nothing came out from the darkness. Dammit. She should have brought her mace, or her stun gun, or hell, even her bat. Something. But in her excitement she’d left all of her precautionary ass-kicking-survival-kit in her SUV.
She crouched down, quietly cursing the darkness, looking for her ear piece. A quick move from her left grabbed her attention. One very large, very angry looking brown wolf stood there, baring his teeth at her. She shot up to her feet, her hands immediately going into fists. She knew all the Wolfe’s in their wolf shape. With a white wolf for a mother and a black one for a father, all the men had some combination of black and white on them. She knew Aric’s by heart from secretly watching him all those times in her youth while he tore from his shorts to run with his brothers and friends. This was not one of the wolves she knew.
“Now you stay right over there and nobody gets hurt,” she whispered. Her mind ran a million miles per hour. She tried to figure out how to defend herself if it came down to a fight with the big wolf. Something poked her from behind. She grasped around, until she had her hands wrapped tight on the branch behind her, tugging until she broke a limb off.
A low growl was the animal’s only response. Heartbeats pounded hard in her chest, spreading the fear she was trying to tamp. He took a menacing step toward her. She didn’t know what the animal’s plan was, but her gut said it wasn’t a good one.
“Listen to me carefully, fur ball. You’re not going to turn me into puppy chow. Now go back to the party down there,” she cocked her head to the side, “and forget I’m up here. Got it?”
The wolf’s features turned darker, as if angered by her words. Trust her to piss off an already angry wolf. Nice.
A deeper growl made her jerk her head to the right. Another wolf stood there. His gaze locked on the brown. She knew this wolf. The thick black coat with the white paws and muzzle belonged to only one man. Aric.
The standoff was making her stomach queasy, and her stupid outfit was itching like crazy. Aric’s wolf took three steps and stood in front of her. The brown growled and launched toward them.
Aric shoved the wolf off. The brown whimpered from a bite, but the stupid thing didn’t stop. It went for her again. Aric snarled, digging his paws into the brown fur and biting down on the brown’s neck. She winced.
With the branch in her grasp, she watched the brown lower its head in submission. Apparently that was enough for Aric. He let go of the wolf and turned to her. The brown took Aric’s distraction to jump in her direction, but she’d been watching the wolf closely. She had a feeling he wouldn’t give up so easily. Her vision sharpened, and she focused on the animal leaping toward her. She swung the branch with all her might and heard the sound of bone cracking as it made impact with the wolf’s face. He landed on his side with a thud. Aric stood and shoved at the other wolf, growling at it and snarling a warning. The other animal left, limping and whimpering. Every few steps he’d turn and glare at her.
The burst of adrenaline rushing through her made her continue to grip the branch. She stared at the location the other wolf had left through, waiting to see if he would turn around and attack. Something brushed her leg, taking her concentration from the other animal and bringing it back to the present. Shit. Aric had found her. She glanced down at the black and white wolf, which reminded her so much of a Dalmatian.
“Er… Aric?” She whispered. Her throat went dry. This was the man she’d wanted since forever and his muzzle was level with her privates.

I got cover pretties tonight… So you get to share my excitement. Wytchfire will be here this weekend! 🙂
The super-short blurb I’m working from at the moment will be your next tease:
Will she remember enough to save herself? Will she change enough to save the planet?
It’s the week of the cover reveal for my crit group. Today, I’m featuring Sarah Cass’ second to her Dominion Falls series. Since she (and I, on her behalf) is so excited to share this with you, you get a chance at a signed copy of Changing Tracks, plus a surprise book by one of the main character’s favorite authors.
To get you excited for the chance… Here’s the blurb from book 2:
The sins of a past she can’t remember could destroy a present she’ll never forget.
The crimes of her forgotten past threaten the very life Jane Doe has learned to cherish.
Jane is out of time. With a warrant on her head, a maniac out for her blood, and a secret baby on the way, something has to give.
Without Cole Mitchell’s help to find the answers, there may be no hope left.
Cole has nowhere left to hide. He unwittingly let Jane into his heart, and is ready to share the secret of his dark past.
Fate has a way of playing its hand, and tragedy strikes. With the world crumbling around them, it’s easy to lose faith. If they can’t forgive past sins, they have no hope for the future.
Because the noose waits for no man or woman.

More about Sarah:
Sarah Cass’s world is regularly turned upside down by her three special-needs kids and loving mate, so she breaks genre barriers, dabbling in horror, straight fiction, and urban fantasy. An ADD tendency leaves her with a variety of interests that include singing, dancing, crafting, cooking, and being a photographer. She fights through the struggles of the day, knowing the battles are her crucible and though she may emerge scarred, she’s also stronger. Changing Tracks is her debut novel, but she’s already ahead of the game with another novel set for release in April. While busy creating worlds and characters as real to her as her own family, she leads an active online life with her blog, Redefining Perfect, which gives a real and sometimes raw glimpses into her life and art.
Where to find me:
Tonight, despite the blizzard outside, the cockles of my heart are blazing: I Haz Cover Art!
One thing I love about indie publishing: It allows me control of imagery and branding for my books. And Gayla is awesome to collaborate with in the process of refining graphic ideas and how they might play in our target market.
The result is the beauty you see here.
I could go on about the challenge of doing photo-realistic covers in the fantasy genre, and the nature of font selection… but I’ll let that remain the mystery it should be for a reader who’s shopping for their next book and happens to stumble across what I’m sharing with you now.
So: For anyone waiting for book 2 of the Red Slaves series, or anyone who wants to try out a book that walks the line between contemporary fantasy and paranormal romance… WITH DRAGONS–your wait is almost over.
