Another Week’s Challenges

Difficult doesn't mean impossible. It simply means that you have to work hard. After how rough last week was on me, I was glad this week was a little lighter. And I got things DONE. Even though we had the unexpected bonus of seeing Chris Isaak play at Potowatomie for the second year in a row. For a minute, we even thought he might be bringing his autographed guitar to give to my husband (it went to a guy two seats down), and then he stood behind us and sang a song, too. The joy he and his band bring to their playing is palpable and transferable. It just meant that our Wednesday night was … late. Which didn’t help with my energy levels for the rest of the week–even though I felt … some cross between inspired and motivated. (If anyone asks nicely, I’ll post pictures… later.)

Honestly, this weekend has felt primarily like it’s a sleep-catch-up zone.

😀

On the other hand, I once again turned in all my classwork ahead of the scheduled deadlines. I was out walking in the unseasonably cool weather four times this week, but am blaming my sleep-fogged brain for having forgotten to turn on the mile-tracking app. I don’t think I managed the 5-mile goal, but I’m counting that I got out at all when I was so tired as a win.

And I wrote. I have an actual progress bar in my sidebar now. I didn’t hit the 1,250 words per week I’d set as a goal, but I realized I needed to do some background research on Russian topography and geography, and began building a Red Slaves map in Google maps that has me all excited. My mental map needed some clarity–and there are specifics to the West Siberian Plain I had never known. Did you know this is the largest expanse of flat land anywhere in the world? Or that nearly 10% of Russian territory can be classified as swampland? These were factoids that blew up my mental picture of that corner of the world. If I ever gain Russian readers, they won’t ::snerk:: at my feeble grasp of their country’s particulars, and that counts as a big win in my book.

This week I face midterms again, so I’m not sure I’ll manage that 1,250 goal either. But it sure feels nice to be making measurable progress, regardless. In the meantime, check out how the other ROW80s are doing on their goals.

  1. Seems like you got a lot accomplished despite the lack of sleep. Good for you!

Interesting factoids about Russia. Research is where I fail – miserably. Though I love learning new things, I can’t seem to get pumped about the research process. Kudos!

All the best on your midterms . . . your writing goals . . . and your walking goals.

    Have a great week. TTFN
